I was inspired to design Quadornis after watching the “ikran” in James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’. Although beautifully designed, as someone who has studied ornithology, I am not convinced that they would be able to do anything more than glide. The stiff movement of the wings (as opposed to the multi-jointed flap of modern birds) would not create sufficient enough lift or propulsion and the separated sections of the furthest half of the wings would make for an awkward airflow. Also, wings that size, coupled with these faults, would not lift an animal of that size and weight off the ground.
I have a really big interest in birds so I wanted to design one that would be believable in both looks and anatomy.
